Heavy duty punches - Gives you the edge
Punch and Die manufacturer AW Precision LLC Milwaukee WI, has launch its latest range of heavy duty punches.
Originally designed and developed by AW Precision Ltd in collaboration with customers in Europe for applications of piercing up to 0.500 thick steel some 20 years ago, AW Precision LLC now manufacture a full range of solid and ejector style heavy duty punches.
During the perforating process, especially on thicker or modern high strength steels one of the most common causes of punch failure is for the head to shear, this is almost always down to shock and not as commonly thought stripping pressure; the force of stripping would have to be extreme in order to break the head away from the punch shank.
If the punch shank pulls out during the stripping operation, again it is most likely that the fracture to the head was initiated by shock loading and not stripping pressures.
Sound tool making practices need to be in place so all the basics are correct, tight punch plates, toughened backing plates correct punch and die clearances etc ensure that there is less of a chance the punches will break, also Nitrogen sprung loaded strippers are recommended on thicker materials as fixed strippers cause high shock load on stripping/press return.
The design of the heavy duty punch allows the shock waves created by the perforating process to be transferred through the centre of the punch and a way from the stress raising points where the shank and head meet, this load is distributed into the toughened/hardened backing plate.
A larger than standard radius under the head and a reduced diameter on the head also adds to the extra strength of the punch
Heavy duty punches are manufactured in M2 HSS as standard or powered steels are readily available upon request.
AW Precision’s offers the added benefit of Dura-kote® which has been developed for punch and die applications and out performs TiN and TiCN coatings.
